Grand Rapids, MI, May 28, 2026 — The 2026 Libertarian National Convention, which took place in Grand Rapids, MI, May 21st-25th, ushered in a new era of leadership as Evan McMahon was elected as Chair of the Libertarian Party. Outgoing interim Chair Steven Nekhaila did not seek reelection, and Evan McMahon was elected with a tally of 320 in favor of 598 ballots cast, defeating other candidates for Chair including Jim Ostrowski, Wes Benedict, Rob Yates and Jeremy Kauffman.

Mr. McMahon has served as Secretary for the Libertarian National Committee since 2025, and has chaired the Libertarian Party of Indiana since 2021. Evan McMahon has a depth of experience in the political arena, having worked for numerous high profile campaigns, ballot drives, and advocacy campaigns before joining the Libertarian Party in 2010. His record as Chair in Indiana speaks to the effectiveness of his tactics for party growth, posting an increase in membership elevating the Libertarian Party of Indiana from 13th nationally to 7th.

As one of the core missions of McMahon’s chairmanship, he will seek to drastically increase membership to 66,000 dues-paying members by 2028.

“We will have people going out to support the candidates by door-knocking, phone banking, putting out signs, donating to the effort, working with their county parties, running their state parties — and that is how we will elect people to office and change this country,” said Evan McMahon. “We will end the bureaucracy through the next generation of our membership. I want us to change the policy so that the next generation is freer. But that starts at membership. That starts by having an LNC that functions well and isn’t embarrassing or alienating us from other people. Let’s be proud Libertarians again.”

Other Libertarian National Committee positions newly elected at the 2026 convention include Amanda Griffiths as Vice Chair, Jonathan McGee as Secretary, and Doug Knebel as Treasurer.
