Candidate Bio

Dr. Thomas Laehn grew up in the small, farming community of Allison, Iowa. He received a Bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy from Drake University in Des Moines, where he graduated summa cum laude with university honors. After briefly working as a public
policy analyst in Des Moines, he earned a Master’s degree and PhD in political science at Louisiana State University. Following a one-year appointment as a Visiting Research Fellow at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, he accepted a tenure-track position as an assistant professor of
political science at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. While at McNeese, he taught courses in American politics, ancient and modern political thought, and American constitutional law. In May 2017, he graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law and
accepted a position as a prosecuting attorney in Greene County, Iowa. He was elected Greene County Attorney in 2018 and was reelected in 2022. He is the first Libertarian to hold an elective partisan office in the State of Iowa. Thomas has published books and articles on a variety of topics, including ancient Greek and Roman political thought and constitutional interpretation. He and his wife, Dr. Susan Laehn, and their two children, Sophia and Felix, currently live in Jefferson, Iowa.
