Candidate Bio
Hello! My name is Heather Helton.
I have proudly called Warsaw, Indiana, home since I was six years old. My parents, Michael and Patricia, moved our family to Warsaw from Peru, Indiana, during my kindergarten year. I attended Jefferson Elementary School, Lakeview Middle School, and graduated from Warsaw Community High School with an Academic Honors Diploma.
My educational journey began at Grace College, where I earned my degree in Elementary Education. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to lifelong learning and professional growth. I have expanded my licensure and credentials with a Reading Recovery certification from IUPUI, a Special Education degree from Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), a Master’s degree in Mild Intervention Special Education from IWU, and most recently, an Educational Leadership certification from the University of Kentucky in 2025.
As a special education educator with more than 15 years of experience, my passion has always been serving students, supporting families, and connecting communities with the local, state, and federal resources available to help them succeed. I firmly believe that every student deserves access to opportunities that allow them to reach their full potential, regardless of their background, abilities, or circumstances.
Outside of my professional life, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, taking motorcycle rides, watching movies at our local theater and drive-ins, exploring new books through the Warsaw Community Public Library, traveling to favorite destinations in Kentucky and Florida, and attending concerts featuring artists ranging from Jason Crabb to Uncle Kracker and Jelly Roll. You may also find me staying active at Planet Fitness or stopping by Journey Nutrition.
My decision to run for the school board stems from a desire to advocate for those whose voices are not always heard. Throughout my career, I have worked with students from kindergarten through post-high school programs, giving me a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing learners at every stage of development.
Every day, I witness the dedication of educators and the needs they face in creating effective learning environments for all students. I also see students navigating challenges that extend beyond academics—managing finances, developing handwriting and communication skills, learning essential life skills, and preparing for adulthood. At the same time, many parents are seeking guidance on how best to support their children in an increasingly complex world.
Education is evolving rapidly. Today’s students are growing up in a digital age shaped by artificial intelligence, tablets, and constant access to technology. While these advancements offer exciting opportunities, they also require thoughtful implementation and ongoing professional development for educators. It is essential that schools equip teachers with the training and resources necessary to meet the changing needs of students while ensuring that no child is overlooked.
As a school board member, I will advocate for equitable opportunities for all students, strong support systems for educators, meaningful family engagement, and practical life-readiness skills that prepare students for success beyond graduation. My goal is to help bridge gaps, strengthen partnerships, and ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive—regardless of their athletic ability, family name, or personal circumstances.
I am committed to being a voice for students, families, educators, and our community as we work together to build a strong future for Warsaw schools.
