The Libertarian Party will be hosting a pool side dinner and discussion with elected Libertarian officials in Florida. We’d love for you to join us.
The panel will be moderated by former LNC Chair and current the elected Commissioner of Altamonte Springs, Florida. Jim Turney grew up in the Carolinas, Texas and Virginia before he and his family moved to Altamonte Springs in 1969. During their residency, Jim’s mom taught at Lyman High School and his father started a successful audio visual business in the community.
Jim graduated from James Madison University in 1972 where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science while working in commercial radio as a country music disc jockey. Shortly after graduating, Jim went to serve in the US Army as an air traffic controller until 1976. After his military service, Jim expanded the family business and formed a tape duplication company that was the first to offer video civil court reporting services.
Jim was elected chairman of the Libertarian Party National Committee in 1985 and re-elected in 1987. He has also served on the board of directors of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, helping produce their continuing legal education seminars for lawyers for many years. In 1994, Jim founded a company called “ListServe” that specialized in email broadcasting services. Between 2000 and 2001, he worked with the Mercatus Center of George Mason University to produce training for Congressional legislative staff before deciding to fulfill his ambition to travel throughout Europe by working for a Dutch management services company. Until recently, Jim was an advisor for a Dutch investment fund with assets in U.S. life settlements, which he helped form in 2006. Throughout the years, business and family brought Jim back to Altamonte Springs and in 2015 he returned to the City full-time.
Florida has consistently has been at or near the top of the list of states with the most elected Libertarians. The Panel will talk about what works and what doesn’t work for them when they run for office.

Dennis Misigoy is chairman, Enclave at Black Point Marina Community Development District.
Dennis first registered Libertarian and became active in the party in 2015, after voting for Libertarians for a few election cycles previously. In 2016, he won a contested election with over 60% of the votes to become the first elected member of his district’s board of supervisors. After some early challenges, he successfully led the effort to cut wasteful spending on a set of projects by over 78% and make board meetings accessible to the constituents in the district.

After years of voting Libertarian in general elections, Supervisor Garcia became a registered Libertarian during the 2012 election cycle. In 2016, she was elected to seat 4 on the board of her community development district, where she has succeeded in eliminating wasteful spending, including leading an effort to successfully vote down a project that would’ve cost the district more than $200,000. In addition to her service in public office, she has served as the Chairwoman of the Libertarian Party of Miami-Dade since 2017 and is also a board member for both the Instituto Mises-Mambí and Democracía Virtual. Outside of politics, Ms. Garcia is a successful entrepreneur and businesswoman in the fashion design industry. |
