The Shanghai Austrian Economic Summit this July 20-22 is the premier event in Asia for the free market ideas of Friedrich Hayek.
More than 20 speakers from across the globe will be joining Chinese scholars and fans of the free market Austrian School of thought to examine the current and future state of what is expected to be the world’s largest economy. Eight of these speakers are members of the Mont Pelerin Society, founded by Hayek to promote free market ideas.
Attendees have already registered from all across China as well as from Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan, Philippines, Armenia, India, Czech Republic, Romania, UK, Guatemala, Germany, Norway, Australia, Senegal, and the US.
“Along with the fall of the Soviet Union,” says Jim Elwood, Executive Director of the International Society for Individual Liberty (ISIL.org), “the world’s most momentous story of the last 30 years has been the rise of China from controlled stagnation to a free-market economic powerhouse, yet still under the resurging rule of the Communist Party. What’s coming next? This conference of scholars will explain how government intervention jeopardizes market success.”
The event is hosted by ISIL as their Asia Regional Conference and is organized by Li Zhao Schoolland, who has connected with an extensive free-market intellectual network in her native country. Hayek’s The Constitution of Liberty has been a bestseller and many other translated works on liberty are widely available.
Schoolland is organizing this free-market symposium in Shanghai at the Hilton DoubleTree Hotel from July 20th through the 22nd, plus post-conference tour options. Participation is open to all.
The goal of the 2012 Shanghai conference is to expound on free-market ideas to a Chinese audience and to learn what free-market economists are doing in China. There will be three groups in attendance: 1) international attendees who are interested in both free markets and China; 2) Chinese academic and research economists who are interested in free-market ideas; and 3) university students who want to learn about free-market principles that are not taught in China.
