Guns are not a problem in America. Culture, over-reliance on police, and barriers to gun ownership for non-violent persons, are a problem in America. Americans, in decades past, had more households with guns in them than they do today, and mass gun violence was exponentially lower. Gun ownership is not the problem.
The Supreme Court effectively ruled in Castle Rock v. Gonzales (2005) that police officers cannot be held responsible for your safety. In the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting lawsuit, U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom ruled that the police had no duty to protect the students there. As the police have no duty to protect us, it is up to us to protect ourselves. You are your own first line of defense.
No one can provide for your safety better than you personally, and the government is doing everything it can to stand in the way.
The Libertarian Party supports the literal words of the Second Amendment, “Shall Not Be Infringed.” Free people should not have any restrictions on their right to keep and bear arms and should have the ability to consensually purchase weapons that even the military has access to.
The ATF, an organization that exists to infringe on these rights, must be abolished. “Gun Free Zones” are host to the majority of tragic mass shootings, and must be abolished.
This is the path to a safer, more trusting, and more secure America.
