Dear Friend of Liberty,
Last Friday the number of fans on our Facebook fanpage surpassed 40,000!
Facebook is one of the biggest social networking sites on the internet. Our fanpage provides a forum for thousands of people to discuss Libertarian ideas.
A year ago, in April 2009, we only had 8,000 fans. You can see the phenomenal growth in the graph below:
Below are fanpage statistics for some other politics-oriented organizations (as of last Friday):
Republican Party: 128,778
Democratic Party: 85,316
Campaign for Liberty: 47,121
Ron Paul: 199,552
Cato Institute: 45,407
The Advocates for Self Government: 4,827
Reason Magazine: 17,839
Institute for Justice: 3,490
ACLU: 32,149
MoveOn.org: 87,334
Heritage Foundation: 152,949
Our Facebook fanpage was first set up by former LNC Vice Chair Chuck Moulton. Since September, it has been actively run by LP headquarters interns or former interns who became staff members. I’m pleased that our Facebook fanpage is run by young Libertarians!
The chart below shows that 64% of the fans are age 34 and under, an important demographic for the future of the Libertarian Party.
If you have a Facebook account and want to become a Libertarian Party Facebook Fan, just click the "Like" button below, or you can also click the "Like" button on our fanpage:
(Note, the Libertarian Party does not officially endorse Facebook–it’s up to you to assess the pros and cons of participating in that site.)
Some might say there’s just a lot of hot air on our fanpage. The way I see it, the lively debate and discussion there fans the flames of liberty one post at a time.
People ask questions, share opinions, rant, rave, critique, complain, debate philosophy and strategy, "like" each other’s comments, and much more. While I don’t post things there myself (I need to stay out of the fray), I do glean valuable feedback browsing through some of the commentary.
This Monday Message is dedicated to our growing list of over 40,000 Libertarian Party Facebook fans. May you keep fanning the flames of liberty nationwide!
Sincerely,
Wes Benedict
Executive Director
Libertarian National Committee
