Government should not incur debt...

Tax cuts are great, but we need balanced budgets

After Congress approved the new Republican-sponsored tax reform bill on Dec. 19, President Donald Trump signed it into law on Dec. 22. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 is a mixed bag that will cut taxes for some and increase them for others, and completely ignores the federal government’s chronic overspending. “Tax cuts […]

USDOJ should stop persecuting foreign-owned press

The Department of Justice demanded in November that the Russia-owned media outlet RT must register as a foreign agent under the provisions of a World War II–era law, even though it specifically excludes “any news or press service” with primary interests in the United States. After RT registered, the Executive Committee of the Congressional Radio […]

Congress should let FISA amendments expire

Section 702 loophole allows sweeping warrants to spy on U.S. citizens Congress passed the FISA Amendments Act in 2008 to enable surveillance of persons or organizations outside the United States, but in practice section 702 of the act includes sweeping warrants for the National Security Agency (NSA) and its PRISM surveillance program to collect static […]

Relieved by Roy Moore’s defeat? Thank a Libertarian

Republican candidate Roy Moore lost to Democrat Doug Jones in the Dec. 12 special election for U.S. Senate. The Moore campaign was plagued by allegations of sexual impropriety, and voters turned away in droves from what was once considered a safe GOP seat. The race was so close, though, that Jones won by a margin […]

Libertarians embrace the concept that all people are born with certain inherent rights. We reject the idea that a natural right can ever impose an obligation upon others to fulfill that “right.” We condemn bigotry as irrational and repugnant. Government should neither deny nor abridge any individual’s human right based upon sex, wealth, ethnicity, creed, age, national origin, personal habits, political preference or sexual orientation. Members of private organizations retain their rights to set whatever standards of association they deem appropriate, and individuals are free to respond with ostracism, boycotts and other free-market solutions.

Freedom of association should be a piece of cake

Wedding cakes have become a controversial topic, as a few bakers who object to gay marriages on religious grounds decline to make cakes for those weddings. The U.S. Supreme Court heard Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission on Dec. 5, and will soon decide whether Colorado baker Jack Phillips should be legally required to […]
